The Rise of Medical Testing in Your Social Feed
In today’s digitally driven world, it’s hard to scroll through Instagram or TikTok without seeing influencers touting the latest wellness trend. One growing phenomenon is the promotion of direct-to-consumer (DTC) medical tests—ranging from full-body MRI scans to fertility “egg timer” assessments. While these posts may appear informative and cutting-edge, a new study warns that many of them are misleading and gloss over serious risks.
The research, published in JAMA Network Open, analyzed nearly 1,000 influencer posts reaching a combined audience of over 194 million followers. These posts promoted five popular DTC medical tests that require no visit to a physician:
- Full-body MRI scans
- Genetic tests claiming to detect early signs of cancer
- Blood tests for testosterone levels
- Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) or “egg timer” tests for women’s fertility
- Gut microbiome analysis kits
The findings were striking: 85% of posts highlighted the potential benefits of these tests, while failing to mention possible risks or medical limitations.
Too Good to Be True? Experts Say Proceed With Caution
“These tests are controversial, as they all lack evidence of net benefit for healthy people and can lead to harms including overdiagnosis and overuse of the medical system,” said lead study author Brooke Nickel, PhD, a senior research fellow in public health at the University of Sydney. “If information about medical tests on social media sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
Although these tests may seem like an easy way to gain insights into your health, experts warn that they can be unnecessary or even harmful when used without medical supervision. Many of the promoted tests are not endorsed by medical guidelines for general use and can trigger a cascade of follow-up procedures—some of which carry real physical or psychological consequences.
When Influencers Have Skin in the Game
A significant concern highlighted by the study is the financial motivation behind these posts. According to the findings, 68% of the influencers promoting these tests had financial ties to the products—whether through direct sponsorships, partnerships, or affiliate revenue from clicks and sales.
“Influencers are incentivized to overstate benefits and minimize harms, and many do not have the training needed to vet the science behind products,” said Lauren Westafer, DO, MPH, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at UMass Chan Medical School Baystate, who was not involved in the study.
Westafer added, “Given that most influencers have a sponsorship or generate revenue through link clicks and similar mechanisms, I immediately hear alarm bells ring with each of these types of posts.”
Hidden Dangers: Overdiagnosis and Anxiety
Despite their glossy presentation, these tests can carry risks that go unmentioned in most influencer content. Only 6% of the posts analyzed included any discussion of two key dangers: overdiagnosis and overtreatment.
“People can suffer real harm from false positives,” explained Alex Sheng, MD, an associate professor and residency program director at Brown University’s Warren Alpert Medical School. “A false positive test can lead to a lot of worries and further downstream tests that can be invasive, painful, or even cause permanent harm.” Sheng also noted that a false negative could give someone unjustified reassurance, potentially delaying necessary care.
Even when test results are technically accurate, the implications can be confusing without proper medical guidance. DTC tests often lack context, which can lead individuals to make poor decisions about their health or spend large sums on unnecessary follow-up procedures.
How to Protect Yourself: The SIFT Method
To help consumers navigate the flood of influencer health content, experts recommend using the “SIFT” method—an approach borrowed from media literacy efforts aimed at fighting misinformation.
- Stop before sharing a post and assess your emotional reaction. Be wary of posts designed to provoke fear or excitement.
- Investigate the source. Does the influencer have medical credentials? Are they financially tied to the product?
- Find better coverage by checking reputable health sources that rely on peer-reviewed research and expert consensus.
- Trace claims back to their original source. If there’s no clear origin or citation, that’s a warning sign.
“Social media is full of hyperbolic ideas and emotional appeals,” said Westafer. “The best way to sort fact from fiction is to talk to the doctor who knows your medical history.”
Stick With Trusted Voices
Ultimately, your best health decisions are made with the guidance of a qualified medical professional, not an influencer’s glowing recommendation.
“There is a lot of misinformation online, particularly on social media sources, and anything can seem glamorous in edited reels and curated stories,” Westafer emphasized. “As a result, the most credible sources are doctors who aren’t necessarily pushing these tests—often this is someone’s primary care physician.”
In a world where likes and shares can outweigh facts, it’s important to stay grounded and skeptical. The next time you see a health tip on your feed, pause and ask yourself: Is this medically sound—or just good marketing?
