Child With Heart Outside Chest Lives After Doctors Perform Pioneering Procedure Designed Just For Her

In a medical event that captured the attention of the nation, a team of English surgeons and medical attendants converged in the city of Leicester last Wednesday to undertake a surgical procedure never before attempted within the United Kingdom.

This operation was not only unprecedented but also specifically devised for one extraordinary patient — Vanellope Wilkins, a young girl whose rare and perilous medical condition set the stage for a groundbreaking operation.

The Rare Condition: Ectopia Cordis

Vanellope Wilkins is the only known survivor in British medical history of ectopia cordis, an exceptionally rare congenital condition in which a baby is born with the heart located outside the chest cavity. The heart, instead of forming inside the ribcage as it does in healthy fetal development, grows externally.

According to medical literature, ectopia cordis occurs in only a few births per million worldwide and is often fatal in the earliest moments after birth. Graphic imagery obtained by the BBC captured the severity of Vanellope’s condition, showing her heart exposed at the center of her chest. The organ had fused with her skin during development, presenting an extreme and life-threatening situation the moment she entered the world.

The Extraordinary Team and Their Task

From the moment Vanellope was born in November 2017, she required intensive neonatal care. For the first 14 months of her life, she remained in a critical care unit under constant observation. In addition to the dangers posed by her condition, Vanellope was later diagnosed as autistic and nonverbal, further complicating her medical management.

Her case drew the attention of some of the UK’s most skilled pediatric surgeons, and last Wednesday, a team that included visiting surgeons from London assembled to perform an unprecedented surgery. Over the course of nine painstaking hours, this expert group worked to reform Vanellope’s ribcage, carefully crafting a protective barrier around her heart.

Although these surgeons had overseen complex cases before, none had encountered a surgery quite like this. The procedure itself had to be invented specifically for Vanellope’s unique needs.

Consultant pediatric surgeon Nitin Patwardhan, one of the lead surgeons during both her birth and recent operation, shared his feelings on the morning of the historic procedure. “I’d lie if I say I don’t get nervous,” Dr. Patwardhan admitted to the BBC.

“But having been in this profession for so many years, you actually look forward to it because at the end of the day, you’re doing something that will change somebody’s life,” he added.

A Life-Saving Operation Years in the Making

While a handful of similar cases in the United States have resulted in survival, Vanellope’s survival to the age of seven made her a prime candidate for a permanent solution to her condition. After extensive preparation, the surgical team placed her on a bypass machine, allowing them to operate on her heart safely.

Dr. Patwardhan and his colleagues carefully detached her right ventricular outflow tract and pulmonary artery from where they had fused to the skin. Following this delicate work, they proceeded to break and restructure her ribs, creating a secure and protective cage to house her heart within her chest for the very first time.

The weight of the moment was palpable in the operating theater, as noted by the BBC. A sense of both history and hope filled the room, knowing that the success of this one-of-a-kind procedure could offer Vanellope a new chapter of life with vastly reduced risk.

The Triumph of Teamwork and Compassion

The operation was ultimately declared a success. As the team completed their duties and reflected on the day’s work, they recognized the singular nature of the patient they had cared for. Vanellope was, as they affectionately dubbed her, “one of a kind.”

Ikenna Omeje, another member of the surgical team who had also been part of Vanellope’s birth operation, expressed the profound satisfaction that comes with such work. “The best satisfaction we derive from this is when you get a text message from the mom to say ‘thank you, you guys are amazing’,” Omeje told the BBC. “I think personally, I have just done my job, but it has made a difference to someone and that is very satisfying.”

A Mother’s Relief and Renewed Hope

For Naomi Findlay, Vanellope’s mother, the journey through countless hospital visits and medical emergencies has often been a source of deep anxiety. Yet this time, with her daughter recovering in the pediatric intensive care unit, she felt a quiet confidence take root. Naomi eagerly awaits the moment she can bring her daughter home to be reunited with her siblings — two brothers and a younger sister.

This extraordinary medical milestone stands as a testament not only to the resilience of a remarkable young girl but also to the skill, courage, and compassion of a dedicated team of surgeons who dared to invent a life-saving solution when no precedent existed.
