Causes And Cures For Passing Gas

7. Gluten or Lactose Intolerance

Well+Good

Many adults are lactose intolerant, a fewer number are also gluten intolerant.  Just as in any food intolerance, this means your body cannot process either lactose or gluten, or both.  Gluten is a protein, lactose is a carbohydrate, both of which can cause some irritation in the digestive system when left unprocessed.  Any food left unprocessed by the digestive system will remain in the gut until it is expelled through the excretory system.  While remaining in the gut, exposed to different stomach bacteria, food that accumulate without being processed or digested completely will go through a decaying process that generates gas as a by-product.  This gas will accumulate to a pressure that the gut can no longer contain, and which it will therefore release as a fart.
