Causes And Cures For Passing Gas

5. Buildup of Bacteria

MedScape

For the body to get nourished, it needs to absorb the nutrients from the food it eats.  Once the food is ingested and masticated (chewed), the next step in the process is to digest the food.  Once digested, the good nutrients go into the bloodstream, for distribution to the organs and body parts that will utilize it.  The bad compounds go to the colon, for disposal.

Part of the digestive process is the utilization of good bacteria for the effective breaking down of the food to extract the nutrients for distribution.  This is how the normal process works.  However, if something goes wrong with the normal process, which can happen from time to time, the result is sometimes an accumulation of bacteria in the digestive tract.  Sometimes this will result in stomach pain or even diarrhea.

Regardless of whether they are good or harmful bacteria, it is normal for bacteria to produce gas as they react to the contents of your stomach.  Even at normal levels, bacteria will produce gas.  At higher than normal levels, the gas they produce can accumulate faster than the body can expel it, and the result is a one-time large volume expulsion of gas, a fart.
