Causes And Cures For Passing Gas

2. Avoid Gum And Carbonated Drinks

Reader’s Digest

Have you noticed you burp more, and fart more, when you drink carbonated beverages?  Same thing happens when you chew gum.

Some people chew gum to address their bad breath.  Ironically, by chewing on gum, they take in excess air in their stomachs, and this results in bad gas going out the other end.

As for carbonated drinks, they actually have extra gas dissolved into them.  Once ingested, the gas works its way out of liquid solution (it separates from the liquid), and builds up in the gut.  This gas will not be re-absorbed by the drink once in your stomach.  It will have to be expelled by either a burp or a fart.

To avoid taking in excess air, avoid chewing on gum.  If you are trying to address bad breath, either use a mouthwash or just brush your teeth.  As for carbonated drinks, you may opt for other beverages instead, like water, tea, or non-fizzy juice.
