Life expectancy worldwide is projected to increase by over four years for women and nearly five years for men within the next three decades, according to a recent study. By 2050, the study predicts that women will have an average life expectancy of 80.5 years, while men will reach 76 years. These improvements are expected to be most significant in countries currently experiencing the lowest life expectancies, as detailed in research published in The Lancet.

In the United States, life expectancy for women is anticipated to rise by approximately 1.5 years and for men by about 2.5 years. Comparatively, in sub-Saharan Africa, women are expected to gain 8.9 years, and men 9.4 years in life expectancy.

Factors Driving Increased Longevity

The study attributes these gains to a decrease in deaths from COVID-19 and other infectious diseases, as well as improvements in combating malnutrition and complications during childbirth. Enhanced prevention, detection, and treatment of heart disease have also played a crucial role. However, future longevity will be increasingly influenced by chronic health issues such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

Lifestyle factors like smoking, alcohol consumption, unhealthy diets, and physical inactivity will become more critical in determining life expectancy. The study highlights a dramatic 50 percent increase in years lost to poor health and premature death due to these lifestyle and metabolic risk factors since the beginning of this century.

The Rise of Metabolic and Dietary Risk Factors

Christopher Murray, MD, DPhil, a professor and chair of health metrics sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle, emphasized the potential to shape global health by addressing these rising metabolic and dietary risks in a statement made. “There is immense opportunity ahead for us to influence the future of global health by getting ahead of these rising metabolic and dietary risk factors, particularly those related to behavioral and lifestyle factors like high blood sugar, high body mass index, and high blood pressure,” he said.

Brandon Yan, MD, MPH, of the University of California, San Francisco, noted the decreasing prevalence of deaths from infectious diseases, pregnancy complications, and infant mortality due to medical advancements and public health initiatives. “As nations develop, access to services like clean running water and sewage treatment improves, reducing the spread of infections that can cause pneumonia, diarrhea, and other conditions,” Yan said. “Access to food and healthcare also improves, preventing many deaths from malnutrition and treatable conditions.”

Lifestyle Choices and Longevity

Despite the study’s findings that increased life expectancy often coincides with more years spent dealing with disability and chronic health problems, Yan explains that this is largely a result of aging. “Quality of life declines with advanced age on average, from loss of mobility and independence and more chronic medical conditions,” Yan adds. “When researchers accounted for age differences, the years of poor health and/or disability did not change much over time.”

The study’s results offer positive news for individuals looking to improve their health, as lifestyle choices will play a more significant role in achieving longevity. “Diet changes to reduce salt, sugar, and animal fats can make a huge difference in preventing or controlling chronic diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol,” Yan says. “Remaining active in daily life helps improve both physical and mental health and is linked to longer survival.”
