2. Cholesteatoma

A cholesteatoma is an abnormal growth of skin in the middle ear behind the eardrum. It is usually a complication of a chronic ear infection, but it may also be present from birth. The condition is rare, affecting only nine out of every 100,000 adults in the United States.

The growth, which may develop as a cyst or a sac, is not cancerous, but if it is left untreated, it may grow larger and cause complications, including hearing loss. Vertigo is one of the symptoms that may occur with a cholesteatoma.
