Causes of Peripheral Vertigo

Peripheral vertigo may have a number of causes, but a majority of the cases (around 93 percent) are a result of one of the following disorders:

1. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a disorder that is caused by calcium crystals called canaliths that become clumped in the canals of the inner ear. Because the inner ear helps you keep your balance, this condition can make you lose your balance and in rare cases may even cause you to fall.

With BPPV, symptoms of dizziness are triggered by changes in the position of your head, such as eye and head movements. It is the most common cause of vertigo.
