Heart failure, also called congestive heart failure, is explained as when the heart does not pump blood as well as it should. As a result, blood can get backed up while fluid can build up in the lungs, creating symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, coughing or wheezing, chest pain, weakness, and many others. Oftentimes, heart failure goes hand in hand with an undiagnosed liver issue, like nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). According to the American Heart Association, ‘about 1 in 4 adults has an often-missed liver disorder linked to higher heart disease risk,’ which also explains why heart failure often has links to raised liver enzyme levels.
