A Los Angeles man, Aric Hoffman, experienced an overwhelming rush of emotions as he heard voices clearly for the first time in his life, all thanks to a cochlear implant.
Aric’s journey with hearing impairment began at a very young age. When he was just six months old, he contracted meningitis, which significantly affected his hearing. Now, at 28 years old, Aric has spent most of his life communicating through lip reading and sign language.
Aric’s hearing had gradually worsened over the years, eventually reaching a point where he decided that a cochlear implant was necessary. His struggles with social interactions were particularly challenging.
“Socializing with people was the most challenging for me before getting my implant because sometimes I don’t understand what people are saying,” Aric explained. The difficult in understanding conversations often led to frustration and a sense of isolation.
The turning point came when Aric received his cochlear implant. His life took a dramatic turn as he began to hear sounds with unprecedented clarity. “I’m now so excited to hear people talking so clearly, without asking to repeat and be able to keep the conversations going,” he said.
The experience was profoundly emotional for Aric. “I was very happy, crying, and overwhelmed to hear the sounds that I had never heard so clearly. I felt like a very emotional moment of my life had begun.”
A poignant video captures the moment when Aric’s cochlear implant was activated. His eyes filled with tears as his audiologist asked him how he was feeling.
“I tried to say something to express how I felt but the words wouldn’t come,” he recalled. The realization of what he had been missing all these years brought a mix of joy and tears.
Immediately after receiving his implant on May 31st, Aric made plans to visit one of his favorite places, Disneyland. This visit was particularly special because it allowed him to experience the park in a way he never could before.
“When the Walt Disney Tiki Room show started, I was amazed how animatronic birds and tropical sounds came into my implants. I was happy to hear the whole show and it made me realize what I was missing out on,” he shared. The immersive audio experience of Disneyland highlighted the new dimensions of sound he was now able to enjoy.
As Aric continues to adapt to his newfound ability to hear, he is discovering the complexities and richness of the auditory world. In his job as a movie entertainment facilities assistant, he encounters a myriad of background sounds that were previously inaudible to him. This new auditory environment presents both challenges and wonders as he navigates through everyday situations.
