26 Foods That You Should Avoid If You Have Gout

8. Brains

Taste of Maroc

Brain as food is incredibly healthy and has been used for thousands of years. It is still quite popular in many regions of the world, including Spain, South America, Morocco, and France. Humans have been consuming animal brains since, well, ever. In fact, before they could hunt, our earliest human ancestors learned how to scavenge the brain and bone marrow. The high nutrient density of these organ meats supported the rapid expansion of our own brains, allowing us to cooperate and employ hunting equipment skillfully. The widespread coverage of prion-related disorders, particularly mad cow disease, has scared some people away from eating animal brains. Thankfully, mad cow disease no longer exists. Mad cow disease is also not present in the young animals from whom the brain is taken as food. Poor quality items are a more realistic concern than prion illnesses. Poorly treated animals’ brains may be more fibrotic and nutritionally deficient. However no matter how ethically the animal was treated, brains will always have high levels of purine.
