17. Amyloidosis

PCDS

Amyloidosis refers to a collection of rare and serious illnesses caused by an aberrant protein called amyloid accumulating in organs and tissues throughout the body. The accumulation of amyloid proteins (deposits) can impair the function of organs and tissues. This can lead to organ failure if not treated. Amyloid deposits in the heart can stiffen the muscles, making it more difficult to circulate blood around the body. This could lead to cardiac failure. Amyloid proteins can also accumulate in other organs such as the liver, spleen, nerves, and digestive tract. Because AL amyloidosis does not affect the brain, it does not create issues with memory or thinking. If you experience any of the aforementioned symptoms and are concerned, consult a doctor. The doctor can prescribe medications to alleviate these symptoms.Multiple myeloma, a kind of bone cancer, has been associated with AL amyloidosis in some cases.
