You might not immediately associate a cough with a heart problem, but a chronic cough could actually be a sign that something is wrong with your heart. A heart failure often causes fluid congestion, or a buildup of fluid in the lungs. Cases like this are often referred to by doctors as congestive heart failure. This fluid congestion can cause you to cough and wheeze, sometimes expelling phlegm or mucus. This type of coughing is also known as cardiac cough.
