14 Signs Of Asperger’s Syndrome

9. Uncoordinated Movements

Everyday Health

People with Asperger’s Syndrome are frequently described as “uncoordinated” or “clumsy,” and many have obvious motor control issues. Early intervention to address motor impairments may help to enhance physical abilities as well as the disorder’s hallmark social issues.

Those with the condition show greater rates of motor skill impairments than healthy controls, including deficiencies in gross and fine motor coordination, balance, gait patterns, postural stability, joint flexibility, and movement speed. Despite the ubiquity of these issues—for example, two studies found that children with ASD have impaired motor skills at rates of 59 percent and 79 percent —motor impairments are not part of the disorder’s diagnostic criteria.
