6. Slow Movement and Thoughts

When you’re diagnosed with hypothyroidism, you might feel relieved to finally have a reason for why you’ve been feeling so low. This syndrome is associated with depression, as well as sensations of general achiness and weariness. There are things you can do to raise your mood while you wait for relief with thyroid hormone replacement therapy – it might take weeks or months to find the proper dose for you, and even longer to feel better physically and emotionally. Remember that how you feel about hypothyroidism is likely to be influenced by how long you’ve had it and how severe it is, according to Tamara Wexler, MD, PhD, an endocrinologist at NYU Langone Health in New York City. “If someone has a more gradual onset of underactive thyroid, which is more typical,” she says, “it will be experienced differently than if it comes on more suddenly due to a medical condition, for example,” she says. “If the condition comes on quickly like this, you’re more likely to feel lethargic or depressed.”
