10. Brittle Nails and Hair

Hair follicles, like other cells, are controlled by thyroid hormone. Hair follicles are particularly vulnerable to low thyroid levels than other tissues because their stem cells have a short lifetime and turnover rate. Hair follicles cease renewing when thyroid hormone levels are low, resulting in hair loss. When the thyroid problem is addressed, this usually improves. Thyroid hormone levels were found to be low in 25–30% of individuals who saw a specialist for hair loss in one research. In people over 40, this percentage jumped to 40%. Furthermore, another study found that hypothyroidism can cause hair coarsening in up to 10% of those with low thyroid hormone levels.
